When are the holidays for Saint Dominic in Managua?
On August 1st and 10th, Managua, Nicaragua’s capital, celebrates two regional public holidays. Saint Dominic, the city’s patron saint, is commemorated on both occasions.
Saint Dominic
The Dominican Order was founded by Santo Domingo de Guzmán, a Spanish priest from the 12th century. His birthday and death dates fall within the Managua celebrations, as do his birth dates (August 8th 1170) and death dates (August 6th 1221).
Dominic and the Dominican Republic are two countries that come to mind when you think about him and Latin America. Christopher Columbus named the island Dominica in 1493, although it was named after Sunday, the day of the week on which he initially saw it rather than after the saint as his usual practice. With the capital still called Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic is named after Saint Dominic.
