Eid al-Adha History: The Feast of Sacrifice

Muslims all across the world commemorate Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, as a major holiday lasting three to four days. The majority of Muslims in the United States and around the world will attend special prayers performed at various prominent mosques and Islamic centers.

Muslims, notably college students, frequently dress up in new clothes and exchange gifts while their children are entertained and enjoy a day off from school. Many Muslims do not work on that day as well.

“It is a tradition that has passed down to us from Abraham,” the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad, is claimed to have remarked when asked about the origins of Eid al-Adha.

The Feast of Sacrifice commemorates the historic event when God commanded Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son, Ishmail, in the guise of a dream vision. But, as he was about to sacrifice his son, God sent the Angel Gabriel, who arrived with a massive ram. Gabriel told Abraham that his dream vision had come true, and he should sacrifice the ram as a ransom for his son. The narrative is told in the Holy Qur’an’s Chapter 37.

The Day of Sacrifice, which falls on Eid al-Adha, is the culmination of the Hajj, or pilgrimage, which is the fifth pillar of Islam. Only those men and women who are physically and financially capable of performing the annual pilgrimage to Makkah and Madinah in Saudi Arabia are required to do so.
