What is the History of Grandparents Day in the United States?

Grandparents’ Day began in 1970 when Marian McQuade began a push to make Grandparents’ Day a national holiday. McQuade campaigned to raise awareness about elderly persons and their accomplishments throughout history, as well as to encourage young people to ‘adopt’ a grandmother for a set period of time. The US Senate, notably Senators Robert Byrd and Jennings Randolph, as well as President Jimmy Carter, recognize McQuade as the creator of the holiday.

Senator Randolph introduced a motion in the Senate in 1973 calling for Grandparents’ Day to be declared a national holiday.

However, this proposal was shot down by the committee, forcing McQuade to rally supporters and contact governors, congressmen, and senators around the country, pushing them to declare their own Grandparents’ Day. Along with West Virginia Governor Arch Moore’s yearly designation of Grandparents Day, 43 other states have declared a National Grandparents’ Day.

Other senators, including Randolph, introduced a joint resolution in the US Senate in February 1977, calling for an annual presidential proclamation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as Grandparents’ Day. President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation designating Grandparents’ Day as an annual official holiday on August 3rd, 1978.

When is National Grandparents Day in the U.S.?

The first Sunday after Labor Day, which is Sunday, September 11 Grandparents’ Day in the United States this year, is designated as Grandparents Day.
