Every year on September 24, South Africa celebrates Heritage Day. In 1995, the first Heritage Day was observed. Shaka Day, as it was formerly known. Shaka Zulu, The Legendary Zulu King, Was Honored on Shaka Day. We talk about South Africa’s Heritage Day in the post that follows.

The History of Heritage Day

South Africans would visit his tomb annually to pay tribute to him. A request to reaffirm the day as a legal holiday was turned down in 1995. The majority Zulu party, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), objected, but it was ultimately deemed that the day was necessary.

The 24th of September, however, was originally just a Zulu holiday observed in the province of KwaZulu-Natal prior to 1995. On the other hand, September 24 was observed as “Shaka Day” or “Shaka’s Day.” In Kwa-Zulu Natal, King Shaka Zulu was crucial in uniting the several Zulu clans into a single nation.

The Zulus objected that “Shaka Day” was left off of the list of calendar holidays when the New Shout Africa Parliament Bill to establish South Africa’s official holidays was passed in 1995. Finally, a compromise was reached, changing September 24 to “Heritage Day.”
