In honor of Juneteenth, we’ve selected some quotes and greetings that capture the essence of this celebration. Wishes for a safe and happy anniversary, messages of gratitude, and thoughts on the past are all included in this compilation.

When was Juneteenth first celebrated in America?

In Texas, June 19, 1866, was the inaugural date of Juneteenth. The event commemorated the day African Americans in that area first learned about the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after it was published.

History of Juneteenth

The fifteenth commemorates a tough period in American history, as well as the last vestiges of slavery in the country. Texas was never directly involved in the Civil War, and its slaves were unaffected by the Emancipation Proclamation, to the point where individuals from all across the country had flocked to Texas to avoid the bloodshed that was going on elsewhere. Thousands of slaves were brought into the Lone Star state during this time, and it took a long time for them to be free.

“The people of Texas are informed that, in compliance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free,” Union General Gordon Granger read from a balcony in Ashton Villa on June 19th. Former owners and slaves are given perfect equality of personal and property rights, and the previously existent tie between them is replaced by that between employer and hired labor.

How to Celebrate Juneteenth?

Take some time to learn about the history of your country and state, and go to some of the local celebrations. For African-Americans, the fight for freedom is far from done, with thousands enduring persecution and racism each year. While enormous strides have been made to help ease this and create understanding between people of all races, only an appreciation for the terrible past and working together to change the future can truly bring what began in 1865 to a conclusion. Juneteenth is your chance to speak out against the racism that still exists in the United States and do your part to help put an end to it once and for all.
