History Of National First Responder Day
National First Responders Day was established in 2017 by Congress. Firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and others who are on the front lines in emergency situations are honored by this resolution. Sean Collier, a police officer who was murdered during events surrounding the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, was a supporter of the bill.
Accidental injuries were identified as the “leading cause of death in the first half of life’s duration” in a 1966 federal study called Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society.
Furthermore, the study found that more Americans were murdered in vehicle crashes in 1965 than were killed in the Korean War, and those seriously injured people would fare better on a battlefield than on a typical city roadway. Ambulance services or provider training were also lacking in regulation or standards, according to the study.
The standardization of emergency training for “rescue squad members, cops, firefighters, and ambulance attendants,” according to the authors, is one of the numerous recommendations for both managing and preventing accidental injuries.
It takes between one and three years of professional training today. In the first responder scenario, candidates learn life support procedures such as CPR, tourniquet use, and wound treatment. More complex treatments are provided by paramedics, hence they need more extensive training and education.
