HISTORY OF NATIONAL VEEP DAY

The section of the American constitution that addresses issues relating to presidential succession is highlighted during National Veep Day. Clause 6 of Article II, Section 1, goes into great detail on the procedures the State must follow before choosing a new president and/or vice president. The 25th Amendment further clarified this phrase. When Gerald Ford was proposed as a vice presidential candidate to succeed Spiro Theodore Agnew, who resigned in 1973 due to a tax evasion scandal, all these protocols were taken into consideration and put into action. But after Nixon also resigned in the wake of Watergate, Ford was given the office of president of the United States a year later.

Over the years, there have been a number of amendments made to the presidential succession constitution. Although the person who wins the presidential election now determines who becomes vice president, this was not always the case. Prior to 1800, the vice presidential nomination was awarded to the candidate receiving the second-most votes. However, Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr tied for second place in the 1800 election, receiving the same number of votes. Due to this circumstance, the twelfth amendment was amended to provide individuals to cast separate ballots for their preferred vice presidential candidates. The current Article II, Section 1, Clause 6 reads as follows: “In case of removal of the president from office, or of his death, resignation, or inability to discharge the powers and duties of the said office, the same shall descend upon the vice president, and the Congress may by law provide for the case of removal, death, resignation, or inability, both of the president and vice president, declaring what officer shall then act as president.”
